Q: |
Is this the
same scenario that we showed strong objection to in January during a
public meeting at Madeline Symonds Middle School? |
|
A: |
It is still
the same streets and homes affected but the 6-9 population has been
removed as well as the terminology boundary change. It is no longer
just a verbal temporary placement. It is now in writing. Experience
has taught the families of Hammonds Plains that verbal agreements and
good intentions change as staff and elected board members change.
Therefore, having documentation to support the "no boundary"
intention was crucial. |

Q: |
What is next? |
|
A: |
Many residents
as well as the Kingswood School Issues Committee have been
expressing
concerns to the appropriate decision makers regarding; the flawed
process, the
lack of support from our school board member, Mike Flemming,
what our
Hammonds Plains School could be doing to support the Kingswood
families, and
the importance of a transition team reflective of the affected
students. At
the same time, our residents remain long-term focused. The
educational
stability of our children continues to be first on our minds. To
permanently
relieve the overcrowding in Hammonds Plains and bring the
displaced
students back to their community in September 2005, the site
selection team
(SST) for the new school, must begin today. This team must be
representative of the communities directly affected in order to be a
process that we will accept and support. Site Selection is a joint
effort between the province and the school board. The final location
of the school is chosen by the Minister of Education from the three
choices submitted by the SST. The Kingswood School Issues Committee
has requested to be part of the SST and have requested that the SST
begin immediately. This will be the focus of our next lobby effort if
the SST start date is not received by
Friday, May 2, 2003.
