Busing of Students of Kingswood Elementary

STEP 4 - Copy and paste the following prepared letter into the body of your new e-mail:

To: All Board Members, Halifax Regional School Board

As a resident of Kingswood, I am writing to ask for your support to secure busing for our elementary students. As you are all well aware by now, we live in a rural-type neighbourhood that lacks the proper walking infrastructure to maximize the safety of all users, especially our children. Implementing a walking policy in an area that lacks walking infrastructure has been very difficult for parents to understand.

Our committees on safety have worked hard to communicate the inherent dangers faced by pedestrians and cyclists in our community: roads built for thoroughfare traffic with blind crests and curves, a lack of traffic calming measures, unsafe shoulders sloping toward deep ditches with no separation from traffic, and the speeding traffic itself.

They have worked with HRM to find solutions and have been stymied by policies that do not allow for measures to combat the dangers of vehicular traffic. In addition, sidewalks are a cost-prohibitive and long term solution. We need action now!

A collaborative approach between all levels of government and residents is the best approach. It is time for everyone to show their concern for promoting responsible transportation of students to school.

We need your support to ensure that these young children are not lost to a policy intended for urban settings. I am not asking for you to increase the amount of busing that the Kingswood area currently has but rather to maintain the current level of busing until a permanent 'safe' solution can be found. It is my hope, that on May 31, 2006 you will vote for the safety of all children. Say 'yes' to accepting the shared cost of busing the Kingswood Elementary School Students, as the government has proposed.

Sincerely,

[insert your name here]
