Black bear Alert

Oct 23rd - NEW

ALERT #2 - BLACK BEAR SIGHTING IN KINGSWOOD ON THOMAS DRIVE / FISHER DRIVE / ST. GEORGE BLVD - For the second time in as many weeks we are sounding the alert about a black bear in Kingswood. The last sighting reported was on Thomas Drive on Oct 22nd. Here are some very important tips and information relating to bears in our community...

Natural Resources at: 1-902-861-2560.

Officials at Natural Resources are indicating that more black bears than usual are roaming near homes due to the low amount of natural foods like berries in the wild. Residents within 2 kms of the latest sighting should act to eliminate all sources of food attractants near their homes for the next 2-3 weeks including keeping garbage in your garage or basement and keeping meat and fish out of your greenbins (veg. matter is ok). Meat & fish may be kept frozen in ice cream containers in your freezer until greenbin collection day.

Join your neighbours

Oct 21st

JOIN YOUR FRIENDS & NEIGHBOURS ALREADY CONNECTED - One of the most important reasons for the development of this community information website is to create a community wide safety alert system that is able to contact residents with important messages like the recent Black Bear Alert that was sent on the 11th (additional info below).

In addition to the safety alert system, connected residents receive updates on the website developments like the recent launch of the Political section.

Accounts are free and they allow residents to access the website behind the scene to post their own content and used gear for sale on the Buy & Sell 24-7-365. All new registrations are managed through our new www.hammondsplains.ca website. To become a valued connected resident and take advantage of this fun and free service, please take a minute to "... Add Your Voice".

DAILY BEAR UPDATE

Oct 12th

2nd BLACK BEAR REPORTED AT BONN DRIVE SATURDAY / SUNDAY - Natural Resources has confirmed that they have received 3 more calls from residents on and around Bonn Steet near the end of St. George Blvd. They have not received any calls since Saturday night so they believe that the bear has left the area.

BEAR CAUGHT AT 340 ST. GEORGE BLVD SATURDAY Oct 9th - Natural Resources has confirmed that they have successfully caught and removed the black bear roaming in the Kingswood subdivision on Saturday, October 9th without incident. The bear that was caught was a 275 lb male with an injury to it's neck (a snare was embedded in its skin, likely from a young age).

SAFETY ALERT E-MAIL PHOTO CLARIFICATION - In the e-mail alert sent our to our connected residents, we asked if any resident may have a photo of the bear and if they would like to submit it to the website. This was only intended for those residents that have already seen the bear in their own backyards and had taken a photo from the safety of their homes. The photo was intended to give other residents information as to the bear's size and in no way are we suggesting that residents seek out the bear to obtain a picture - Black bears are extremely dangerous and contact should be avoided at all times. Our sincere apologies for any confusion.

Kingswood Water

August 28

UPDATE ON KINGSWOOD WATER SUPPLY MEETINGS - Carolyn Morton attended the Western Region Community Council meet on Monday evening, August 23rd to make a presentation regarding quality and quantity of water for households with wells in the kingswood Subdivision. Carolyn has previously made contact with the council in June to advise them of water concerns. The matter was discussed and Jim Donovan (Planning Dept for HRM) indicated that a report was being prepared by his department to be presented to a City Council meeting in September. Carolyn is working to obtain a copy of the report and plans on attending this council meeting on behalf of the subdivision. For more information or question on how you can get involved call Carolyn at 835-1343.

Pet Consideration

August 10

REMINDER TO PET OWNERS - WASTE: Pet owners are reminded to be diligent in picking up after their pets. A significant number of residents and small children are walking the same streets where you walk your pet. For sanitary reasons, spoiling the view and foul odour, please remove pet waste and it's also the law. ROAMING: Owners are also reminded to keep animals on leash whenever possible - there has been at lease one vehicle / dog accident resulting in the death of the dog. As well, safety of the public and pets is also a concern.
