Hostas are
long-lived, carefree, shade-tolerant perennials with beautiful
leaves in a wide variety of colours and sizes.
Many hostas
have leaves with white or gold stripes down the middle or around
the leaf edges(variegated). Good larger cultivars, growing about
2 ft tall and 2-3 ft wide are H.fortunei 'Aureo-marginata'
and 'Wide Brim' hosta, both with dark green leaves edged
with gold or yellow bands. 'Antioch' and 'Francee'
are similar in size but have white leaf edges. Two popular
smaller hostas are 'Ginko Craig' which has slender green
leaves with a thin white border and H. undulata 'Variegata'
which has broad wavy edged leaves with green and white stripes.
Both grow about 1 ft tall and wide.
For more information
on hostas, read last month's article by Anita Sulley, an avid
hosta lover. If you are interested in trading hosta or other plants,
consider joining the Kingswood Garden Club. The Club will be holding
meetings again in the Fall.
